L/A Artwalk - Lewiston Maine the new arts destination

Some images from the sights and sounds of Lewiston Maine during Artwalk

L/A Artwalk 2015 - Images by Keith Spiro

Who said this city ain't got no heart?"

Certainly not Lewiston Maine where I attended their Artwalk for the first time. It's been a long time since my board of director days at Five River Arts Alliance, but compiling a list of statewide artwalks and visiting them are two entirely different things.

Lewiston was a delight. City streets, clean, bright and filled with residents and visitors alike strolling around and gathering in small groups to enjoy the warm evening. Maine summers are short and so we jam a whole lot of activity into this reprieve from winter. Artwalk has always been the harbinger of good weather.

No Artwalk in Maine is complete without a visit to one of my favorite artists @artbymariaCU Maria never disappoints. Her energy level -  translates readily into her art work and my purchase of four magnets with some of her delightful characters

Lewiston born and bred musician John Cote was delighting the hungry crowds at Forage, a local eatery hot spot.  I dance, drive and tap my toes to his fast paced beat.

I have to give a lot of credit to the creative souls of Lewiston who took a defunct bridal rental shop and turned the multitude of shoes into an inviting street exhibit. I understand that each month it gets more intricate – as you can see here -  and yes, the shoes are free for the taking if you find your size. Really.

What I enjoyed most about artwalk L/A was the fact that the small neighborhood stores of the most recent immigrants were open – and welcoming. I remember years ago,  not speaking French was a distinct disadvantage in Lewiston, but today, not only was I welcomed into the stores and small clusters of people but they switched to English and asked "Can I help you? " With my answer of, just curious and welcome to America – they opened their doors and proudly showed off their world.
This girl started smiling when she saw me taking pictures and posed here when I asked if I could take her picture. There is an exotic air about the small stores of the newest residents. This is an opportunity that is worthy of a follow-up, in focus, visit.

Pictures at an Exhibition

Yes, the famous Modest Mussorgsky composition of 1874. I got to participate in a unique collaboration of music and art when my work was selected by the Harlow Gallery and the Augusta Symphony Orchestra for a multimedia performance of the work this past Saturday.

I was also invited by the Harlow Gallery to capture photographic images before and during the performance to create a collage exhibiting the energy, passion and joy of live concert performance. I must have done an ok job as the Maestro himself took a look at the 63 images that I was able to present at the end of the concert during the reception.

Stay tuned here for contact and link information to be able to see all the images from the show. They should be up by this coming weekend. Thanks

The Richness of Autumn in New England

Travelling by Amtrak's Downeaster this morning, looking out the window at mother nature's canvas, I am reminded of why I like this season so much. The early morning hour enhances the red's and yellow's and the still waters reflect the still leaf laden trees. Since returning from Hawaii, I have taken on a full time marketing job at Kendall Press in Cambridge. One of the many bonuses of this position is the monthly rail pass that allows me to think, plan and write while riding the rails.

This past month I've had the dual opportunities of working with YELP's event at Microsoft's New England Research and Development (NERD) center during the week and working with Patrick Dempsey at Central Maine Medical Center at the Dempsey Challenge. Patrick is both humble and very giving of himself and his time. Look for a series of published photos and stories coming out in November on this. One of the photos here is Patrick Demspey with George Hincapie (7 time tour d'France winner who also rode with Lance Armstrong). And how cool is it to see them looking at the pictures from my Hawaii assignment.

Helping small business via my specialty of Visual Imagery in Marketing is greatly satisfying for me. The perks along the way aren't bad either.
