L/A Artwalk 2015 - Images by Keith Spiro
Who said this city ain't got no heart?"

Certainly not Lewiston Maine where I attended their Artwalk for the first time. It's been a long time since my board of director days at Five River Arts Alliance, but compiling a list of statewide artwalks and visiting them are two entirely different things.
Lewiston was a delight. City streets, clean, bright and
filled with residents and visitors alike strolling around and gathering in
small groups to enjoy the warm evening. Maine summers are short and so we jam a
whole lot of activity into this reprieve from winter. Artwalk has always been
the harbinger of good weather.
No Artwalk in Maine is complete without a visit to one of my
favorite artists @artbymariaCU Maria never disappoints. Her energy level - translates readily into her art work and my
purchase of four magnets with some of her delightful characters
Lewiston born and bred musician John Cote was delighting the
hungry crowds at Forage, a local eatery hot spot. I dance, drive and tap my toes to his fast
paced beat.
I have to give a lot of credit to the creative souls of
Lewiston who took a defunct bridal rental shop and turned the multitude of
shoes into an inviting street exhibit. I understand that each month it gets
more intricate – as you can see here -
and yes, the shoes are free for the taking if you find your size.
Really.
What I enjoyed most about artwalk L/A was the fact that the
small neighborhood stores of the most recent immigrants were open – and
welcoming. I remember years ago, not
speaking French was a distinct disadvantage in Lewiston, but today, not only
was I welcomed into the stores and small clusters of people but they switched
to English and asked "Can I help you? " With my answer of, just
curious and welcome to America – they opened their doors and proudly showed off
their world.
This girl started smiling
when she saw me taking pictures and posed here when I asked if I could take her
picture. There is an exotic air about the small stores of the newest residents.
This is an opportunity that is worthy of a follow-up, in focus, visit.
